A History of Innovation
American Leather was founded in 1990 on one revolutionary idea: custom leather furniture could be made and shipped in three weeks or less. Founder/CEO Bob Duncan applied “just-in-time” manufacturing he admired from the Japanese car industry to the furniture industry. From a small four person shop, the company has grown into a thriving leader in the furniture industry, with over 130 different collections.

The factory, based just outside of Dallas, Texas, still makes furniture – now in leather and fabric – in just four weeks or less, a delivery standard that’s three times faster than the industry average. From the beginning, the factory was set up to manage mass customization through the latest technology and manufacturing systems, making American Leather the most automated leather furniture manufacturer in North America, if not the world.

American Leather and the Environment
American Leather is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council, a non-profit organization created to promote sustainable practices in the furniture industry. Here are other key ways in which they work everyday to make their products and their factory more environmentally friendly.

Frames - All wood used in their furniture is harvested from sustainable forests. They recycle over two million pounds of leftover wood. American Leather also use recycled and scrap hardwood using an innovative technology to repurpose the wood. They recycle their wood, but not use recycled wood for frames Glues are chemical-free, water-based binders. They use water-based glue that doesn't contain or release volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Leather - All leather is dyed using water-based solvents and pigments. American Leather offers 35 environmentally friendly, biogradeable leathers made through natural, chrome free, chemical free processes.

Cushions - Their cushioning includes soy-based foam cushioning, which is fully recyclable and available in a wide assortment of firmness and densities. To help prevent ozone layer damage, they use high- density and high-resiliency foam that's free of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

Factory - Their factory conserves energy with automatic light shut-offs and they encourage employees to recycle and to use non-disposable water cups and coffee cups instead of Styrofoam or paper products. Their furniture is manufactured in Dallas, Texas. Since none of their products travel across an ocean, they can arrive faster and with a smaller carbon footprint than imported goods.
