75
Years of Ekornes History - (1934 - 2009):
Founded in 1934 by Norwegian Jens Ekornes. The Ekornes company started out
making steel spring components for mattress manufacturers and was located
in Sunnmøre, Norway. It was here that Jens Ekornes started working with
his first customers and would soon be selling his spring components throughout
Norway. Looking for a greater challenge he decided to pursue building mattresses
himself and began researching better ways to build a mattress by traveling
to various trade shows and furniture exhibitions. He wanted to move mattresses
away from wooden frames and lacing to building mattresses with linked springs
with steel coils. He traveled home and he and his shop foreman Nils Sjøholt
began work on what would become the Svane mattress line. With the success
of the Svane mattress Jens Ekornes would soon hire more employees, offer
more products and obtain new factories for building his Svane mattress line.
After WW2 he would travel to the United States where he decided he could
learn more about the trade. He purchased American machinery and brought
with him an expert from the USA to help setup the new production equipment
and to help train his workers in how to use them for building better upholstered
spring mattresses. For the next twenty years Svane mattresses would continue
to grow in popularity. It was during this time that Jens Ekornes opened
up a factory to begin building wooden furniture components for beds and
mattress bases which he would make for other manufacturers. He also began
work on producing foamed plastics which would become a very important part
to expanding on his plan to move and establish Ekornes into home furnishings.
In 1966 Ekornes launched a new line of club or lounge furniture by sending
out a national mailer to every home in Norway. The success of this mailer
would follow every year with a new catalog of Ekornes furnishings. This
furniture was launched with the brand name Ekornes which would bring the
name Ekornes into every home in Norway.
In early 1970 Ekornes decided to concentrate on a selective sales strategy
in the Norwegian market. The reduced the number of distributors and the
name of the local distributor was printed on catalogs. It was in this same
year that Ekornes applied for a patent for "Stressless". In 1971 the first
Stressless recliners were introduced to the Norwegian markets. The success
of these chairs led to the required expansion of several plants to handle
the increase in sales and would begin to move Ekornes and Stressless into
the largest expansion and growth that the company had ever experienced.
During the early 1980's, Ekornes began to concentrate on expanding into
other markets including the United States which would soon become the largest
export market for this Scandinavian furniture company. The Stressless line
would continue to grow through the decades that followed from just recliners
into sofa, loveseat and sectional offerings. The Ekornes line would also
see additions in the way of stationary furniture which also included sofas,
loveseats, chairs and sectionals. New innovations were also introduced into
the Stressless line which would include patented features such as the Glide
System TM and the Plus System TM used in every Stressless high-back model.
Today, Ekornes continues to move towards building a better piece of furniture
and operates out of four primary plants that build and construct all of
the necessary quality furniture components that go into every Ekornes and
Stressless piece of furniture. Ekornes is still committed today to those
same early principles that the company was built on in accepting greater
challenges and finding better innovation in design.
